The Global Business Opportunities Convention 2001 (G-BOC2001), the 16th staging of G-BOC, was successfully held with the participation of 341 government and business leaders from 31 countriesregion overseas and also of overall 7,441 representatives from (about 2,200) companies and organizations based in Japan. I would like to express our sincere thanks to all the participants and supporters from both overseas and Japan for their contribution to the great success of this event.

G-BOC2001 was conducted in the midst of persisting economic and social unrest brought about by the worldwide recession and further aggravated by the simultaneous multi-attacks by the terrorists against the U.S. Despite such adverse circumstances for business, various active business talks took place on diverse business needs brought together by overseas enterprises keen to enter into the Japanese market. Overseas government agencies inviting Japanese investments and Japanese visitors seeking to do some business with overseas interests to find a way out of current difficulties.

On the part of the G-BOC organizers, we made all the more newly devised efforts, because of the severe environment, to even more effectively support development of all participants' business. Business needs sent in from overseas were posted on G-BOC Websites accompanied with pictures, and detailed business information was wildly publicized. Also for G-BOC2001, consultation in advance with participant exhibitors was made possible on the Internet, strengthening functions to facilitate smooth conducting of business talks by participants. As a result of such efforts that we especially made, the Individual Business Talks proved highly successful in substance, with 278 cases (about 20%) out of the total 1,340 cases of business talks reported to be linked with either contracts for business or expectation for contracts to be made. On the other hand, efforts were made to support Japanese companies' exports by transmitting overseas, on the Internet, details of business needs and selling points of 4,200 Japanese companies that are registered on the G-BOC.

With the rapid progress worldwide of Information Technology, it is essential for enterprises nowadays to achieve success in doing business speedily and accurately obtaining necessary information, while widely sending out worldwide on the Internet, their own business information for the attention of overseas companies. In such entirely new business environment, the urgent task before us is to consolidate business infrastructure to construct highly serviceable business sites, to introduce over the Internet, more reliable business information, and furthermore to offer "opportunities on the Internet for business talks."

Therefore our aim hereafter is to focus endeavors on promotion of business exchanges on the Internet by further strengthening the functions of 'Cyber G-BOC' that enables users to offer business information and conduct Individual Business Talks on the Internet, and to make next year's G-BOC 2002 the final event of the G-BOC held every October all these years. As for the highly evaluated one-to-one meetings for business talks, we intend to meet the needs and requests from overseas, and are currently making preparations for the systems to conduct such individual meetings by contract targeting particular countries and themes, on required occasions.

G-BOC2002, as the final event of the annually held G-BOC, will be conducted on the 3 days of October21-22-23, 2002, at MYDOME Osaka. With upgrade of business exchanges on the Internet, we are firmly determined to do the utmost to make the business talks meetings at the G-BOC2002 most practically useful both online and offline. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming many participants at this event next year.
